Soa

Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is an architectural pattern that predates microservices and provides a foundation for understanding service-based architectures.

SOA is an architectural style that organizes software into reusable, interoperable services. It focuses on business processes and uses services as the fundamental building blocks.

  • Service Reusability: Services can be reused across different applications
  • Loose Coupling: Services are independent of each other
  • Standards-Based: Uses standard protocols and formats
  • Business Focus: Aligns with business processes and capabilities

While SOA and microservices share some concepts, they differ in:

  • Service Size: SOA services tend to be larger
  • Technology: SOA often uses enterprise technologies (ESB, SOAP)
  • Governance: SOA has more centralized governance
  • Deployment: SOA services are often deployed together
